Aberdare National Park
Overview
Aberdare National Park is a protected area in the Aberdare Mountain Range in central Kenya, located east of the Great Rift Valley. Covering 766 square kilometers, it lies about 100 km north of Nairobi. Moreover, it features a wide variety of landscapes, from rugged peaks rising to 4,000 meters to deep valleys with rivers and waterfalls.
History
The park was established in 1950 to conserve the Aberdare Mountains and their unique ecosystems. In addition, Aberdare became world-famous in 1952 when Princess Elizabeth became Queen after her father’s death, while she was staying at the historic Treetops Hotel.
Landscapes and Ecosystems
Aberdare’s terrain is exceptionally diverse. For example, the higher altitudes are dominated by moorlands, while bamboo forests and rainforests thrive at lower levels. As a result, visitors experience contrasting environments within a single park. Streams, rivers, and dramatic waterfalls further enhance its beauty.
Wildlife in Aberdare
The park is rich in wildlife, offering excellent game viewing opportunities. You can spot:
Big mammals: lions, leopards, elephants, Cape buffalo, and the endangered East African wild dog
Unique species: giant forest hog, bongo, mountain reedbuck, and black-and-white colobus monkeys
Birdlife: more than 250 species, including the endangered Aberdare cisticola, Jackson’s spurfowl, and African fish eagle
In addition, Aberdare supports one of Kenya’s largest populations of eastern black rhinoceros, making it a critical conservation area.
Accommodation and Activities
Visitors have several choices when it comes to accommodation. For instance, they can stay at:
Treetops Lodge – historic and perfect for game viewing
The Ark Lodge – built in the style of Noah’s Ark, with excellent nighttime wildlife sightings
Campsites and bandas – affordable options for adventurous travelers
Furthermore, activities such as game drives, birdwatching, hiking, and guided nature walks ensure there is something for every traveler.
Accessibility
Aberdare National Park is easy to reach. It is only a 2.5–3 hour drive from Nairobi, and therefore makes for a convenient getaway. In addition, the park has two airstrips at Mweiga and Nyeri, making chartered flights possible.
Conservation
As part of Kenya’s conservation network, Aberdare plays a vital role in protecting water catchment areas and endangered species. Moreover, efforts led by the Kenya Wildlife Service continue to safeguard this unique habitat for future generations.
